The Account Login Module allows you to provide a way for your users to login into their account for your site.  This allows you to provide an easy way for users to login directly on your pages rather than requiring them to find the "Login" link on the skin to go to the default Login Page.

The Account Login Module asks the user for their ID and Password and authenticates the user when they click the login button.  It also provides the user a link to retrieve/reset their password if they do not remember it.

There are a few optional functions that the Account Login Module can perform as well depending upon general settings of your site.

If your site has been set to allow registration of users it will provide a "Register" link to allow users to register and create a user account.

Additionally, if your site's authentication settings has been set to require a CAPTCHA confirmation, then the login module will also require the user to enter the CAPTCHA value before being able to login.  CAPTCHA is the mechanism of providing the user an image of "warpped" text content and asking the user to enter the letters that are in the image. This helps to ensure that the users are human rather than a computer/robot attempting to access your site and do any number of attacks to your site. For more information on CAPTCHA view the article on Wikipedia.
